Our Services
Overview
Comics and graphic novels have great power to show complex stories of research and science.
From how Richard Scarry showed us What People Do All Day, to the humour of XKCD, and the powerful science stories of PAGES Horizon, the medium of comics perfectly combines image and text to help us understand deep scientific concepts.
Cooked Illustrations specialises in using comics and graphic novels to tell research stories for multiple publications and contexts. Comics are not just valuable creations for magazines, but can increase interest in science stories on social media, high impact reports, and even act as graphical abstracts of research posters!
Comics and graphic novels also present ways through which your research can be commercialised, creating new avenues to fund your research.
The opportunities that arise from creating scientific comics and graphic novels comics are many:
Developing of a character opens branding opportunities
Characters can be commercialized, opening new sources of revenue for a laboratory or individual researcher through merchandizing
Translating research into a narrative for general audiences brings research directly to those communities
While we often think that comics are most effective with children aged 6-14, comics can be powerful tools for all ages and aspects (Widening Engagement article)
Explaining scientific processes that are unfamiliar to us (Dumbarton Oaks articles or Sandy)
